Yeadon travelled to Hall Park Horsforth which saw them gain a 3rd victory of the season.

Yeadon lost the toss and batted first. With only 1 wicket lost, runs being scored freely, and good running between the wickets the young uns are improving and understanding the game more and more each week.

A last pair partnership of 42 gave Yeadon a total of 296-1 which was a very good total on a big pitch.

After the break, it was our turn to bowl which again is improving week on week. Some great fielding helped the bowlers keep their total down and Hall Park finished their innings on 249-5.

The team for the day was Seth, Alfie, James, Gabriel, Mia, Archie, Lewis, and Nathan.
Well done everybody!!

Result
Hall Park 249-5.
Yeadon 296-1.
Yeadon win.

Firstly I’d like to welcome all the new faces to YCC. Most notably of those is Shaun Miller, our resident Aussie straight from Sydney. This is Shaun’s first time in England so he’s likely to need time to acclimatise to our weather and come to terms with the Yorkshire accent. In Australia, his reputation includes; being controlled by his girlfriend, being an awful driver and regularly crashing his parents car, unnecessarily acquiring parking fines, and being a bit of a fat kid in his youth (apparently). In addition to this, Shaun plays a high standard of cricket as an opening batsman for Sydney Cricket Club. We’re certainly hoping to see the best of his talents on display at YCC this year, to help us in our push for promotion.

I’d also like to welcome Ben Elvidge (Mr Potato Head) back from Australia, where he spent the last 6 month playing for the same side as Shaun. Ben and his family are very kindly playing host to Shaun whilst he’s over here, so our thanks go to them.
Last year, Ben was a fantastic asset to YCC and played a pivotal role in many games. Bens Achilles heal was an inability to land 6 balls in the same place, a high proportion of which landed closer to his feet than the batters – inexplicably these seemed to be Bens most effective balls! We’re hoping he’s left some of these in Australia however more importantly for the team, we hope his banter allergy has cleared up.

Most other things haven’t changed; Olly still has a tooth missing, Gaffer still refuses to get his hands dirty and greaseball’s still propping up the bar, pretending to glass collect at dos when we all know he’s learing over the women. Whether you’re new to the club or part of the furniture, good luck for the season!

As well as some new players, we’ve also acquired some new equipment for the ground. Last year the weather cost us dearly, and was arguably the main reason the 1st XI missed promotion. To help avoid a repeat of this, we’ve got a new cover significantly bigger and more durable than the last, and some new rollers which remove surface water. These are important purchases for the club and we’re very grateful to have them. Obviously the onus is on the players to look after them to ensure they last as long as possible.
Unfortunately the weather has already hindered some of the preparation of the ground for the season, but its nothing that can’t be rectified when the sun returns.
In addition to ‘weather protectors’ we also have a new pair of sight screens for the club house end, after the last one was irreparably damaged by the wind. Thanks to Andy Emsley for building this for us.

In the weeks leading up to the start of the season, lots of people, both cricketers and non-cricketers, have been involved in freshening up the club and rebuilding an otherwise derelict wall. Lots of hours and hard work went into this, all of which is voluntary, so thanks to all those who helped out, it really was a monumental effort. We hope this makes the club more appealing to outsiders as a venue, and that it generates a more pleasant environment for the regulars – you know who you are.

Most people will probably be aware by now, that Matt Keane has taken over the role as club chairman from Duncan. Instead of being club chairman, Duncan will take up the role of cricket chairman and so remains a very important member of the club. Duncan did a fantastic job as club chairman and we wish Matt the best of luck as he looks to build on this and take the club forward.

To increase the prominence of the club, Mark Noble has been working hard to develop our online capabilities and presence with a refurbished website. We want to encourage the use of the website as that’s where we’ll advertise ourselves as a venue and any events we’re holding. To help this, myself, Duncan and Andy Pick will be publishing weekly match reports to give you something to read.

That’s all from me.

James Todd
1st XI Captain and leading LBW candidate

On a freezing cold windy day at YCC the youngsters of Yeadon gained their 1st victory of the season. With the experience of last weeks game under their belts the team took to the game like they have been playing cricket for years!
Yeadon won the toss and chose to field first. All the bowlers bowled with accuracy and there were very few wides delivered. The fielding was excellent despite the conditions. Adel finished their innings on 223-8.

When it was Yeadon’s turn to bat they produced a performance that everybody in the team should be really proud of because of the fact that we only lost 1 wicket and scored runs with boundaries and good running between the wickets!! Yeadon finished the innings on 246-1.

A big thank you to all the parents, spectators and people serving tea, coffee and bacon sandwiches on what was a very cold morning! Well done to everybody involved!

Result
Adel 223-8
Yeadon 246-1

The very young team took on Alwoodley on Sunday in a very exciting game. Yeadon lost the toss and bowled first. The bowling wasn’t as good as previous games that they have played in but they stuck to the task and tried hard. With a lot of wides being bowled Alwoodley took advantage of the ‘free hit’ from the tee and scored a lot of boundaries.

Some good fielding prevented the total being out of reach and the home side finished on 296-5. Yeadon’s innings mirrored Alwoodley’s and again the batting side got plenty of practice hitting of the tee. Boundaries were being scored every over which meant Yeadon kept upto the run rate.

Unknown to both umpires Yeadon needed 4 to win off the last ball and with a wide being bowled the ball was hit off the tee for 4. A great win for the youngsters of Yeadon.

Fixtures for the coming week

Friday 10th May Under 13s v Adel at home 6.15 start.
Sunday 12th May Under 9s v North Leeds at home 10am start.

On Sunday bacon sandwiches, tea and coffee available from 9.45.
Come and give the teams your support!

The cricket season has certainly started when you spend your entire weekend stood outside in single figure temperatures.

The first team started the weekend with a trip to Bankfoot; a team who rarely make it easy for their opponents and are tough to beat on their own patch. The weather was miserable to say the least however this didn’t prevent us starting the game on time. My coin throwing practice through the week paid off and I won the toss and decided to put them in on a green wicket.

We made a great start to the match with Olly taking early wickets. Shaun at the other end looked to be feeling the effects of a very cold day. It’s fair to say this wasn’t the kind of climate he was used to. We applied good pressure throughout and really stifled any scoring opportunities for our opponents. The infamous Jonny Barton came to the crease and played some shots and ended up their only player with a double figure score.
We set a trap for him by dropping a man towards the boundary in the hope that he’d hit it out to him. The plan nearly worked as Olly threw a ball outside off stump, Barts dually obliged and threw the kitchen sink at it and lofted his shot in doing so. He hit the ball hard but straight at our man…Gaffer! To be fair to Gaffer, he made a valiant effort at catching it by diving forward. Unfortunately however, most cricketers find it hard to catch balls that hit them closer to their elbows than their hands, and Gaffer was no exception as the ball rolled back towards Barts.

There are 2 phrases common amongst Yeadon cricketers; “have a can of ‘Man Up’”, and “Peter” (Peter – Peter Heart – P(ea) Heart) – I think both of these were created for situations like this as Gaffer asked to leave the field as ‘his hand wouldn’t close’! He returned a couple of overs later, his hand now closing, to inspire us to bowl Bankfoot out for 63. Olly, Shaun, Damon and Ben all bowled fantastically well and finished with fine figures.

To say we made hard work of chasing the target is nothing short of an understatement, as we lost 5 wickets in doing so. The opening attack of Bankfoot is widely regarded as the best in bradford league history. They’re fast, fiery, fearsome and had the ball swinging around corners from the outset, not to mention how much it moved off the pitch. Having made light work of Yeadon’s top order pretenders, only a monumental individual effort could see this struggling Yeadon side home. That persons name eludes me for now, but someone did it…it might have been me! NEXT…

…came Hartshead Moor on the Sunday. We won the toss and decided to bat on a wicket that had already seen 3 games. It must be disheartening for Andy Pick to see another well prepared wicket see so few runs.
Unfortunately the batting wasn’t quite up to scratch again as we lost early wickets which put us on the back foot early on. We battled well but those who got starts didn’t convert them into big scores and we lost wickets at regular intervals. It was encouraging to see the lower order dig deep and give us something to bowl at. We finished on 118 – a challenging score to defend on any ground but not an easy chase by any stretch of the imagination.

In distinct contrast to the first innings, our bowling & fielding was nothing short of superb. Nick ‘Bucket Hands’ Hudson got us off to the perfect start by taking a superb catch to remove their skipper with the second ball of the innings. This brought their new signing Will Smith (not the star of Fresh Prince) to the crease. Maybe he had some words to say to Ben whilst Ben was batting but Ben certainly had a lot to say to him. It’s well known in cricketing circles that these two have awful chat, so this really was ‘handbags at 10 paces’! Ben had something to say before, during and after every ball, no one knows what was said or how much of a factor it was, but we removed him cheaply. All the bowlers again shone, including our new signing Altaf, who made an impressive debut and picked up a couple of wickets when it looked like Hartshead were aiming for a draw, made possible by the loss of overs due to rain which meant we had to bowl them out. We eventually did just that, for 65! Again, we can take pride in our bowling that we managed to turn around a game which would have been beyond most teams.

Let’s hope we can get another 2 wins next weekend when we host keighley on the Saturday in the league, and travel to Bowling Old Lane on the Sunday in the cup.

Jim Todd
Olly’s been out LBW twice, I’m still on 0

On Sunday the under 9s played a very good North Leeds Hawks side on what was yet another cold miserable morning for the youngsters to be playing cricket. N

orth Leeds won the toss and decided to bowl first. Right from the 1st ball they showed that they were far more experienced, owling accurately and taking wickets.

Yeadon didn’t get down hearted and kept trying to score runs when they could and were enjoying themselves.

When it was Yeadons turn to bowl it was getting much colder with gusts of wind making it hard for the bowlers. Despite the conditions Everybody bowled well with less wides than last week which shows this side are improving all the time.

One thing I have noticed is that all the players never give up and the sportsmanship during and after the game is something that they should be proud of.

Well done to all involved.
Result
Yeadon 176-13.
North Leeds Hawks 346-2.

North Leeds win.
